Over training can happen when our bodies can no longer adapt to the stress that we are putting on them.
In general, the harder we train, the more adaptations and improvements will occur. But without adequate rest and recovery, this “stress” can backfire, and actually decrease performance.
It’s important to find the balance between overload and recovery. Too much overload and too little recovery may result in both physical and psychological symptoms of over reaching and if not treated leading to overtraining.
It’s important to listen to your body and rest when you feel tired.
Total recovery from overtraining can take months and should not only include proper nutrition (in particular adequate carbs and calories), but also managing the stresses in daily life and sleep.
