Salt –
Abnormally high amount for you – Your body will hold on to water – – same way – less salt than normal you will shed water – then the down or up may not be true – its all reflective of water weight
Carbs –
More than normal carb intake – Your body will hold on to water to process the carbs but obviously hold a gallon of water and that changes the number on the scale. An example: People go keto & right away loose weight is because of water weight – rapid weight loss comes to a halt you have lost all the water
Eat late at night-
Later than normal – Perhaps you Usually stop eating at 8pm and last night 10:30 next day weigh more because there is less time for that food to be digested.
Time of day that you’re weighing yourself –
Weigh in earlier than normal – less time to “float”that weight off over night. Example : A Client who was chronically under on sleep. She would sleep 4-5 hours, get up to work… weigh herself and then take a nap later in the day she would weigh less after that nap because she had more time to “float that weight off” losing water weight as we breathe all night long and as your body performs restorative processes.
Constipated –
Have you pooped lately? Obviously being “back up” can cause excess weight on the scale. Eating enough fiber and hydrating well are key in making sure constipation is not a problem.
A Heavy strength day or Super Long Taxing Workout –
When you exercise, your body is breaking muscle down…in a good way and wanting to rebuild it. When muscles are damaged and repaired and they hold on to water, glycogen and nutrients so they can repair and get stronger! Rest a day – you may weigh less the next day.
High Stress –
Looking at the mechanics of stress – when you are really stressed the body holds onto water like a defense mechanism, it does not want to let it go! You will weight more on the scale and then stress let’s go- whoosh – then weight will get let go! This is the principle behind reverse dieting – creating less stress on the body and in turn still loosing weight.
If we can look at the scale as data and not our identity we will be in a much better place.
Learning why the scale may fluctuate can help to not give it the power that it may have had over us in the past!
Also: In regards to stress – You are not going to gain fat from being stressed! You gain fat from eating too many calories! Now if you’re stressed eating because life is super stressful right now and you are leaning into food to cope with or ease that stress then yes you will gain fat. Learning to manage stress is where magic lies!
